Consulting at Greenpeace

Advising on a community mobilization strategy

Greenpeace Netherlands hired my to consult on their community mobilization strategy. As a consultant, I strongly believe in making use of what is already in the organization. Advice from outside is only effective if it can be planted in fertile soil. My goal was to present a plan which could be accepted by both the leadership team (LT) and the community mobilization team.

In phase 1, I started with a round of interviews which lead me to a PowerPoint presentation with a flowchart and an advice to focus on two tracks. I tested my advice with the man who had hired me. He was enthusiast. The LT and the community mobilization team were also satisfied.

In the second phase of the project I met with the team to fill in the flow chart. We discussed division of labor and the consequences of this new way of working. These sessions were inspiring for the team. That was important because there had been lots of changes in the organization that had had a negative effect on morale.  My advice brought clarity and focus.

Listening helps to propose a focus which seems logical. It is easier to win support and get people on the bandwagon.
